Great food. They cooked at our table and were very accommodating with a food allergy. Generous portions. Everything tasted great. Service was excellent. Would highly recommend

I don't know why we ever decide on going to Hibachi Restaurants, because I always get let down. I do not go often and each time I do I remember why I don't. The Hibachi Chef had a prop that was part of his show that made the experience worth while. He pretended to spill soy sauce on a member of our party. It was string attached to the top of the bottle; it was shockingly hilarious. My fiancé and I are local so we will go back to try the Sushi, to give them a fair shake. Whatever you do, when on SPB, DO NOT go to the Basil Leaf! The Basil Leaf has the worst service ever for a Sushi Restaurant!

This place has gone drastically downhill in the past year. The restroom is past the kitchen, and upon exiting the restroom there was a cockroach crawling on the floor in the hallway. I could go into the horrible food quality on this particular visit but I think I've already driven home what to expect. They've apparently committed to squalor and I'm glad I wasn't hospitalized. Don't go.

Didn't really want to go here based on other reviews, but decided to give it a try anyway. We were pleasantly surprised as we found it good, but not great. Pros: good food, drinks were strong. Cons: overpriced, understaffed. We were ok, but the next wave of customers had to wait a while for everything.

Great sushi restaurant tucked away in St. Pete. The sushi quality was amazing and the wait staff prompt. Also try one of their cold sakes, they have an amazing collection.

We decided to go to Blue Fugu after arriving late in the evening and wanting something light and good before going to bed. Yelp reviews looked good as did the menu. It was a great disappointment. The server was less than friendly, though she did keep our water glasses mostly filled. We each ordered the Oizi (or ginger salad.) The description of the salad was "crisp lettuce with other vegetables and ginger dressing." If by "other vegetables" they mean shaved carrots, then I guess they were accurate. It was a wet soggy salad and the ginger dressing was harsh and lumpy. We tried to order the crab cream croquette, but they were out, so we ordered the goyza (pork dumplings) instead. They arrived hot and quite greasy. We then ordred the crunch roll and the ninja roll. While there was nothing wrong with either roll, they certainly weren't stellar. There are two sushi restaurants back in the small town of Oneonta in the middle of nowhere in upstate New York that are both better than this place. The total bill was $32. It was not money well spent.

We used to love Blue Fugu; it was our go-to place for sushi for about two years but it has been going downhill for well over a year. They seem to be resting on their beach location and the captive audience of tourists without rental cars who will eat there because they can walk from the beach front hotel. We are locals and we aren't going back to Blue Fugu. Food and service have become mediocre at best.

I have been going to Blue Fugu for years- my friend took me when I went to visit for spring break and now that I live in St Pete, I always take people when they come to visit me. I suggest calling ahead for a reservation- it is sometimes busy even on weeknights, but then you get seated right away. It's standard Japanese Steakhouse fare but it's definitely the best I've been too- the shrimp is so fresh and the steak is always tender and they give you a TON of food. My husband and I are also obsessed with the special sauce they give you for your seafood- I have no idea what's in it, but it's delicious! It's pricy but worth it... also, if you go when Rolly is working, he is hands down the best chef! It's like seeing a comedy act and watching him cook your dinner- two thumbs up!

We went for dinner on a Monday night, and all 5 of us ordered sushi. The waitresses were friendly and kept our water filled-- however, there looked to be only one sushi chef, so it took a while before the food came. When it came, though, it was really good, with large chunks of fresh-tasting fish. The tobiko nigiri was overflowing, the sake maki had buttery-soft salmon inside. The crawfish roll (don't remember the exact name) was really good-- I wasn't sure if it would taste muddy. Depending on what you order, it could range from $20-30/person for dinner.

Took our granddaughter there for graduation dinner. The chef was very entertaining. Made it a great evening.

On the hunt for some decent food, we drove around St Pete's beach. In a strip mall that bragged Dollar Tree and tired looking signs, the only decorative sign that stood out was a blue colored one - 'Blue Fu Gu'. A quick search on Yelp revealed 4 star ratings, and so I went in. The restaurant is divided into 2 sections - one for sushi and the other for hibachi. The decision was made - after all who can resist fireworks and knife tricks over dinner? Drinks orders were collected rather slowly but the pace picked up when the hibachi chef arrived, and told us this was his first attempt. The traditional sizzle of the grill, onion volcanoes and egg smashing took place with a little drumming of the steel spatula. Our appetites were suitably wetted as every meal comes with a salad and soup appetizer. Next came the actual hibachi portions which are enormous - whether you order the $30 filet mignon and scallops, or the vegetarian hibachi, either option could easily feed 2 people (given that each hibachi also includes sides of shrimp, extra veggies and lo mein). Whilst the shrimp is delicious and takes up the flavor of the grill, the veggies etc. are meh... As the chef wheeled away his sauce-laden cart, I wondered why hibachi restaurants always confine themselves to the predictable mushrooms, broccoli and snap peas.

The building & staff... This is tucked away in a plaza with a Publix. A fancy glass elevator ride up leads you to the restaurant. The actual place is very nice and the decor is not tacky. Our server was nice and attentive, so no complaints there. The food... I don't know what is up with these sushi places serving tiny sushi, but I am over it. The prices were reasonable, and so we stayed. However, when the spider roll and ninja roll came out, I changed my mind about the price being reasonable. The rolls were teeny, and to add insult to injury, they were average-tasting. The shrimp-flavored rice cake thing that came before the meal was pretty spectacular, but otherwise, I was not impressed. The drinks... Um, $3.25 for a soda. Really? I mean, really? Overall, not going back.

Really good overall. Maki roll specials (had both) were more than excellent. BEAUTIFUL PRESENTATION. Really fresh, and you can watch the sushi chef in the mirrors in the ceiling area of the sushi bar...you can even see them work from a table around the sushi bar....unique perspective. Seaweed salad was good, enough for 2. No problems with service, and the place is clean. Other sushi/teppanyaki restaurants in a reasonable proximity to Blue Fugu have problems with cleanliness...see for yourself, or take my word for it. I noticed lots of happy people at the teppanyaki tables. We could see and hear the show...looks good and like fun. Here's a nice revelation....the whole place smells like.......nothing! Meaning that the ventilation system for the tables works really well....and your clothes will not stink the rest of the night. Only ding they get is for the shrimp and vegetable tempura appetizer - $10 and you get 3 shrimp, and 6-7 vegetable pieces....OK,.... for $10 - lots of people split an app...how about 4 shrimp for $11? Also, on this occasion, it was served a bit less than hot...but acceptable. You should go....I will go again.

I'm addicted to this place! I have been going here for over 2 years now. Excellent service and excellent presentation of sushi. The staff is wonderful. When I get a screwdriver, the lady will even squeeze fresh oranges for my drink. (they have me spoiled!).. they make my sushi roll exactly how I want it every time. It has a nice atmosphere too.

We went for a birthday dinner and it was ok. Not great. Kind of pricey. Overall not terrible but have had better hibachi other places. Might try it again if in the area.

It's more 2 1/2 stars really. We're in St. Pete Beach for the weekend from Chicago. Decided to try this place. It's in a strip mall, but most places seem to like that the area. We had tempura appetizer which was mediocre. They didn't use panko breading, which is more traditional. Also had the pork shumai, which was oversteamed and mushy. It tasted like its just been in the oven the whole day. My husband ordered sushi (mackerel, salmon & tuna) he said it was definitely fresh. So go here if you're ordering sushi, we didn't try any of the Maki rolls so not sure about those. I had the steak teriyaki, which had really good flavor. The teriyaki flavor wasn't overwhelming, but others might find it too mild. It came with miso soup, which had great flavor too. People dining teppanyaki style seemed to have a good time, though I doubt the food was good given our experience with the appetizers. The interior is dated, but not too many updated places in the area.

Great sushi and friendly staff. The rolls and nigiri we had were delicious and of good size, we couldn't finish everything we ordered. Price was reasonable for a restaurant in a tourist area. If in the area again we would certainly visit again.

Enjoyed a good meal with several sushi rolls and a shrimp/scallop and veggie dish. I'm used to west coast sushi so I was not wowed by the sushi. That being said, overall, the food was good but not great. Id probably go back if I'm ever back in town. The service was good and the ambience was nice (in fact it was a nice change from crazy beach bar scene). Id give this a solid 3 1/2 stars.

Really fun hibachi grill! They are very accommodating here. I love the steak and chicken combination dinner. Don't forget the Goody-Goody and Yummy-Yummy sauces!

Outstanding Sushi Bar. Everything was perfect. The sushi chef was 1st class. Recommended tilefish special sashimi which ended up a perfect choice. Will visit again when come back to St Pete Beach area.

Thanks to Yelp for helping us break out of the typical Bar food in the area.. Blue fugu is hidden away on the second floor but after some trepidation from the few negative reviews we decided to venture in. Good ambience, mirrored ceiling over the Sushi chefs was a nice touch.. Very pleasant staff, relaxed atmosphere, and service was good, courteous and attentive. Sign said hours till10 but we lingered with many other parties till later than that with no attitude or pressure from staff. Wife and I both had Miso soup and Sushi, fish was very fresh, prepared beautifully, and portions were adequate... On a par with what we expect from the Northeast as we are from CT. I would not hesitate to recommend , give it a try.

We always used to come here. Last few times very poor quality fish and meat. My salmon smelled to high heaven... my husbands steak so tough and full of fat. Plus, now they charge for everything. Used to be included. We waited much too long to be seated and had to wait longer for a cook... very dirty on tables. A film was on them. Plus, must be saving on electric bill it was rather toasty in there. Will not be returning. Lost 2 great customers. Go into St Petersburg, they have Japanese restaurants that are very good.

Some of the BEST sushi in St. Pete, and for a great price! My guy and I ordered 3 different kinds of sashimi, 5 beautifully crafted rolls, and a bottle of saki and it was all around $85, which for the quality and hand-crafted nature of everything is more than fair. The presentation was stunning and everything was so delicious. Will definitely go back again and again.

After visiting several hibachi restaurants in the area, blu fugu is by far the best. The meats and seafood are fresh, the prices are right, and the staff is incredibly pleasant. The restaurant is in the publix shopping center to the right. It's hard to see the sign. It's on the second level but there is an elevator in case you can't make the stairs.

Very delish! This was our final meal in St. Pete. The restaurant is on the 2nd floor of a strip mall. I had no idea why the waitress gave us a hot towel at the beginning ( my wife explained to me later), which was very nice. Our appetizer of sushi was out of this world. For the price, we got a extremely large amount food. My main course of salmon teriyaki with sticky rice was awesome. She had a steak teriyaki that was very tender and awesome. The restrooms were very clean and well marked. No complaints here

The restaurant and the decor was decent. However, the sushi could have been better. It's as if they were going out of their way to make tiny pieces of sushi. If it were not for all the water I drank, I don't know if I would have been full. I usually eat smaller portions for all my meals, but this was ridiculous. If you tend to eat more, then be prepared to order lots of sushi or afterwards go to the fast food joint in the adjacent parking lot.

This is the first time my wife and I tried this place because we are from VA. Sushi was ok and a bit pricey. The rice is too sticky and too much rice vinegar for my taste. It's good but nothing to rave about. Customer service is excellent.

Blue Fugu is tucked waaaay back in the Publix strip mall plaza on the right (south) side where the place converts to two stories; they're on the second floor. There's absolutely no way you'd know they're back there from the street so I'm honestly not sure how they stay in business considering St Pete Beach is mostly tourists. In any case, I'm a local and my wife and I eat here regularly and enjoy it. There are only two Japanese steakhouses in close proximity to the beach and this is the better of the two. Anything else is going to be a 20+ minute drive. That's not to say there's a reason to drive further away as Blue Fugu is actually quite good; we've had consistently good service, good entertainment from the chefs and high food quality. The only slight negative is the pricing is marginally on the high side; i.e. tourists are a captive audience so lets exploit that. The prices aren't high enough that we avoid going though, they're not as bad as Benihana or Kobe (chain steakhouses) by any means, but they're certainly higher than you'd expect from a non-chain local restaurant. They have a full liquor bar, so no worries about not being able to have a cocktail with your meal. Prices are average. They also have the typical selection of Japanese beers, Sapporo, Kirin, etc. There is a sushi bar if you prefer to sit at the bar rather than at a table, and for those not interested in hibachi, there are also many regular tables. I often get the tuna hibachi and have never had what tasted like a bad cut or something that had been sitting around a bit too long, so no concerns there.

Some of the locals pointed us at Blue Fugu for sushi and it did not disappoint. The quality of the sushi was--barely--not quite up to west coast standards, but it's about as good as you can get this side of the country and does a good job of incorporating local specialties. Both the traditional sushi and the special rolls are excellent. Even so, many places can boast equally good sushi. What puts Blue Fugu ahead is the price--the sushi menu is surprisingly affordable, with first-rate sushi at third-rate prices. The ambience is very nice as well. The hostess wasn't particularly personable but the service was extremely prompt. All in all a fantastic experience at a great price.

We had a great meal at Blu Fago. My review should honestly be 4 stars, but with the 3.5 average they currently have, I'm throwing in an extra. The food was good, the place was very clean and the staff was friendly. All of these combined make for a great hibachi experience. Being a Japanese steak house connoisseur, I've experienced it all. Most places just aren't that good, but Blu Fago had it going on. I really appreciated them not using a ton of butter/oil. I eat my whole plate and didn't feel like I was going to explode after. The chef even had some jokes I had never heard before, like the Japanese Butterfly. I would highly recommend this spot. It's not high class but the food quality is good and I felt at home.

Interesting menu with good potential...decent food VERY over priced and in certain ways behind the times... for instance: Only open until 10pm Very expensive and ridiculously high and over large children's portions & prices. No way to order brown rice. No way to share portions without big additional charge. Conclusion? Nice but only for those who vacation here & do not know of other options.

The food was over seasoned and not worth the price! I ordered from the hibachi and had Steak and Grouper at our table. They were both sautéed to soggy. The service was terrible! I waited 20 minutes for my check and the bill receipt. The chefs were flirting with loud and inappropriate 16 years olds next to us. Also my green tea cup was Dirty and tasted like mold.

Blue Fugu is an excellent Japanese restaurant in a shopping mall, close to Publix. The ambience is upscale and the prices are slightly on the high side. We arrived there late about 9PM. Supposedly the restaurant closes at 10PM, but it seemed to be accepting new customers late and stayed open later without any push to leave. We were quickly seated. Food also came out quickly. The server was enthusiastic and really spent time with us chatting as well as suggesting good recommendations at our request. The magarita was standard. The sushi was excellent. We had a fancy roll with snow crab meat and various things. The portion was fairly large, enough to feed two people who aren't voracious. We ended up ordering a second roll, a tuna roll. The miso soup was standard and tasty. The presentation of the meals was excellent. Beautiful presentation with extra raw veggies and pickled ginger.
